Nowon-gu Presents 'Madeul·Ppaengpa' Yeonhui Madang Play for Seniors

Nowon-gu (Mayor Oh Seung-rok) announced that it will present the Yeonhui Madangnori performance 'Madeul · Ppaengpa' prepared for local seniors.

As of July this year, the senior population aged 65 and over residing in Nowon-gu is approximately 94,000, ranking third among Seoul’s autonomous districts and accounting for about 19% of the district’s total population. The district prepared the 2023 Yeonhui Madangnori 'Madeul · Ppaengpa' to provide cultural enjoyment opportunities for seniors, invigorate their lives, and create a space for community harmony.

The Yeonhui Madangnori 'Madeul · Ppaengpa' is a sound performance play that reconstructs the story from the perspective of Ppaengdeok Eomeom (Ppaengdeok’s mother) from the classic tale 'Simcheongjeon' into 'Ppaengpajeon.' This production especially includes various traditional performance elements such as 'Gilnori' (a street parade marking the start of the event), farewell songs, rice pounding songs, Korean traditional music, fan dances, and Jindo drum dances, allowing the audience to enjoy a rich blend of performance arts.

Moreover, the production gathers top-tier domestic directors and cast members. The artistic director is Kim Deok-su, an honorary professor at the Korea National University of Arts’ School of Traditional Arts, who has worked to promote Samulnori worldwide and was appointed co-chairman of the Nowon Tal Festival Promotion Committee last year, showing a deep connection with the district. The general director is Lee Kyung-sook, holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property No. 57 for Gyeonggi Minyo (folk songs), currently spreading Gyeonggi Minyo and Garak Janggu at the Nowon Cultural Center and president of the Noraetgarak Promotion Association.

The cast includes Madangnori masters, actors Yoon Moon-sik and Choi Joo-bong, playing the roles of Sim Bong-sa and Hwang Bong-sa, respectively. The role of Ppaengpa is played by theater actress Kim Kyung-sook, known for performances in 'Mansun' and 'A Special Dinner.' Simcheong is portrayed by Lee Song-mi, a holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property No. 41 for Song Seoyulchang. Alongside them, Hannuri Yeonhuidan, Hwimuyongdan, and Sorimaek Arts Troupe will perform, promising a richer and more exciting show.

The 2023 Yeonhui Madangnori 'Madeul · Ppaengpa' will take place on September 1 and 2 at 4 PM at the Seoul National University of Science and Technology Gymnasium. Admission is free, and the audience is limited to 2,500 seniors aged 65 and over residing in Nowon-gu (1,250 per session). Among these, 900 seats (450 per session) on the first floor are reserved as invitation seats for culturally vulnerable seniors such as those living alone or using senior centers.

The remaining 1,600 seats (800 per session) are general seats on the second floor, with advance reservations starting on the 16th (Wednesday) at 10 AM on a first-come, first-served basis. Reservations can be made either online through the Nowon Cultural Center website or by phone. Each person can reserve up to two tickets, but both the applicant and companion must be seniors aged 65 or older residing in Nowon-gu. Identification must be presented on the day of the performance.

Mayor Oh Seung-rok said, “We prepared this Madangnori performance by great actors for seniors who find cultural activities difficult ahead of Chuseok,” adding, “We will continue to carefully support cultural and leisure welfare that invigorates the lives of seniors.”
