A man in his 20s who posted fake listings for iPads and other items on an internet cafe and swindled over 90 million won from more than 130 people to use for gambling was sentenced to probation.
The Ulsan District Court Criminal Division 3 (Judge Noh Seo-young) announced on the 13th that Mr. A, who was indicted on charges of fraud, was sentenced to 1 year and 3 months in prison with 2 years of probation, 120 hours of community service, and probation supervision.
Mr. A was charged with swindling a total of 66.51 million won from 94 people over about six months starting in April 2022 by falsely claiming to sell electronic devices such as iPads and Apple Pencils on an internet cafe bulletin board. He continued the same method of sales fraud until January of this year, receiving 25.72 million won from 42 people.
Most of the money obtained through the sales fraud was used for online gambling and other purposes.
The court stated, "He committed internet goods transaction fraud against 136 victims over a long period, and the amount of damage, 90 million won, is large, so the nature of the crime is serious," but also said, "Considering that he restored the damage by transferring or depositing the full amount to the victims, and that he spent five months in detention reflecting on his actions, probation was sentenced," explaining the reasoning for the sentence.
