Eunpyeong-gu Raises 'Jingwansa Taegukgi' Flag for Liberation Day

Eunpyeong-gu (District Mayor Kim Mi-kyung) announced that to commemorate the 78th Liberation Day, the ‘Jingwansa Taegukgi’?painted over the Rising Sun Flag?will be displayed on major arterial roads in the district from August 12 to 15.

A total of 4,000 Taegukgi flags, including 2,000 Jingwansa Taegukgi flags, will be hung as street banners along nine major arterial roads such as Tongil-ro, Eunpyeong-ro, Jeungsan-ro, Yeonseo-ro, and Seooreung-ro.

The ‘Jingwansa Taegukgi’ is a Taegukgi flag used by Monk Baek Chowol during the independence movement and was designated as a treasure in 2021. It was discovered on May 26, 2009, during the dismantling and restoration of Chilseonggak at Jingwansa Temple, found between the altar and pillars along with other independence movement materials.

It is believed to have been painted over the Rising Sun Flag with blue paint, reflecting a strong spirit of resistance against Japanese imperialism. This is an important artifact demonstrating how the Buddhist community actively engaged with the Provisional Government and participated in the independence movement, with temples like Jingwansa serving as bases for the movement.

Since 2015, Eunpyeong-gu has been displaying the Jingwansa Taegukgi every year on March 1st and Liberation Day as part of the memorial project honoring Monk Baek Chowol.

Kim Mi-kyung, Mayor of Eunpyeong-gu, stated, “By displaying the Jingwansa Taegukgi, imbued with the noble spirit of Monk Baek Chowol, we hope our descendants will reflect on the significance of Liberation Day.”
