Collaboration with Hyundai Motor Group In-house Startup '3I Solution'
Real-time Analysis of Raw Materials like Steel Scrap... Efficiency Up
Product Development for Used Battery Black Powder Analysis Nears Completion
Hyundai Steel announced on the 10th that it has succeeded in domesticating the 'Industrial Neutron Component Analyzer' through collaboration with Hyundai Motor Group (HMG) in-house startup '3I Solution'.
The neutron component analyzer is a device that analyzes raw material components by using the unique gamma rays generated when elements react with neutrons. By using the neutron component analyzer, it is possible to conduct full inspections while transporting raw materials such as iron ore and steel scrap, and apply real-time data to the operation process to improve production efficiency. Typically, it takes about 8 hours on average from raw material sampling to inspection when analyzing the components of iron ore and steel scrap.
Hyundai Steel is currently reviewing the on-site introduction of 3I Solution's neutron component analyzer. It is expected to secure cost competitiveness by deriving optimal raw material mixing ratios and pre-predicting auxiliary material usage data, and to apply it to high-grade steel scrap component analysis, which will see increased demand due to the transition to a carbon-neutral production system.
The neutron component analyzer project by 3I Solution began when Hyundai Steel reviewed technology to improve steel scrap grade classification in 2018. This project was selected for Hyundai Motor Group's startup team in 2021, recognized for its business feasibility, and after two years of research and development, completed performance verification of the component analyzer and is preparing for spin-off this year.
In addition, the product for analyzing the components of black powder from used batteries is in the final development stage, and plans to expand its application to the increasingly prominent secondary battery recycling industry.
A representative of 3I Solution said, "The neutron component analyzer market is dominated by five overseas companies that hold about 75% of the global market," adding, "3I Solution plans to gradually expand the demand market based on customer-tailored technology provision and price competitiveness by succeeding in domesticating and commercializing the neutron component analyzer." He further added, "We plan to lead and support process innovation in various fields such as the steel industry, secondary battery recycling, and non-destructive analysis markets."
