KT announced on the 10th that it has officially started the private investment project for the next-generation Defense Metropolitan Broadband Integrated Network (M-BcN) construction.
The next-generation M-BcN construction private investment project, conducted through a Build-Transfer-Lease (BTL) method, began with an implementation agreement in July last year, followed by 10 months of detailed design, and will be constructed by September 2024. KT will operate the network for 10 years until September 2034. The groundbreaking ceremony was held the day before at the Onoma Hotel in Daejeon with the Ministry of National Defense and the Armed Forces Command and Communications Command.
This project will expand the military-exclusive communication network, which was previously centered on frontline Army units, to all branches nationwide. Over 2,000 units across the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Ministry of National Defense direct units will be connected via high-speed lines. Based on KT’s specialized control technology, an intelligent management system will be established that allows the military to independently operate and control the communication network.
KT plans to install more than 10,000 km of new optical cables and build an integrated network management system, creating a ‘science and technology strong military’ infrastructure that supports continuous operational system support and work utilization across all military communications networks.
Shin Su-jeong, Vice President and Head of KT Enterprise Division, stated, "We will stably build the M-BcN based on the nation’s best network infrastructure, communication network construction technology, and experience," adding, "As part of Defense Innovation 4.0, we will lead digital transformation (DX) in the defense sector as the developer of interworking technology between the 5G commercial network and the defense network, as well as the smart unit construction project."
