Customized Health Management for Construction Workers at High Risk of Heat-related Illnesses
Systematic Health Checkups and On-site Analysis of Test Results Followed by One-on-One Professional Consultations
Amid growing concerns over heat-related illnesses among outdoor workers during the ongoing heatwave, Dobong-gu (Mayor Oh Eon-seok) has attracted attention by launching on-site health management services for construction workers within the district.
The Dobong-gu Metabolic Syndrome Management Center is conducting a ‘Bonggu’s Health Guardians’ outreach health service aimed at vulnerable groups such as construction workers and traditional market merchants who are exposed to many risks due to their working environment but have been neglected in terms of health management.
‘Bonggu’s Health Guardians’ is a specialized health management service unique to Dobong-gu, where a team of health professionals including nurses, nutritionists, and exercise specialists visit high-risk sites for heat-related and chronic diseases to conduct health checkups and consultations, enhancing workers’ self-health management capabilities.
In this on-site health management for construction workers, the existing services provided by ‘Bonggu’s Health Guardians’ have been expanded to include heat-related illness prevention and health counseling for muscle rest in preparation for the heatwave, offering customized health management services tailored to each worker.
First, after a preliminary survey covering medical history, lifestyle habits, and stress levels, measurements such as body temperature and heart rate to detect heat-related illnesses are taken, along with blood pressure, blood sugar, glycated hemoglobin, cholesterol, and body composition tests for chronic disease prevention and management.
Then, test results are analyzed immediately on-site, and one-on-one consultations with health, dietary, and exercise experts are provided along with personalized exercise guidance for each participant.
One worker said, “It’s my first time receiving such detailed health management at a construction site, so it feels unfamiliar but also like being well cared for. Despite the hot and harsh environment where even the testing equipment could malfunction, the staff conducted thorough tests and provided immediate consultations on the results, which was very reassuring. I am grateful to Bonggu’s Health Guardians for their hard work.”
Oh Eon-seok, Mayor of Dobong-gu, stated, “For the hardworking on-site workers enduring the heatwave, Dobong-gu will not just verbally communicate about heat-related illness management but will actively practice on-site health management services by health professionals to care for vulnerable groups who have been neglected in health management.”
