Daegu Police Agency Strengthens Patrol Activities with Deployment of Riot Police and Others
As a series of 'random weapon rampages' occurred, police special forces and armored vehicles were deployed in downtown Daegu.
The Daegu Metropolitan Police Agency announced on the 5th that it has mobilized 1,116 police officers, including 200 riot police, 660 local police officers, 50 detectives, 6 armed special forces members, and 200 autonomous patrol members, to conduct patrol activities in areas with high crowd density and crime concerns.
Following the weapon rampage incidents at Sillim Station in Seoul and Seohyeon Station, citizens' anxiety over violent crimes imitating these incidents has increased, prompting these measures.
The tactical armored vehicle was deployed at Jungangno Station. This is the first time an armored vehicle has been deployed in downtown Daegu in relation to public safety situations such as violent crimes.
The special forces were deployed at Daegu Airport, Banwoldang Station, Dongdaegu Station, and Jungangno, while officers from six police stations are conducting patrols mainly in their jurisdictions, including Banwoldang, Jungangno, Daegu Station, Dongdaegu Station, and the Suseong Lake area.
In addition, 24-hour joint patrols will continue in areas such as Daegu International Airport, Banwoldang Station, Dongdaegu Station, Jungangno, Daegu Station, and the Suseong Lake area. In crowded places with large gatherings, patrol cars will be stationed as bases, and riot police personnel will be deployed simultaneously.
Not only in Daegu, but the police are conducting the first-ever special security operations nationwide, deploying special forces and armored vehicles across the country.
Special security operations are measures taken at the discretion of the Commissioner General of the National Police Agency to intensively deploy police personnel and equipment when it is judged that maintaining public order is difficult through normal daily security activities. This is the first case where special security operations have been issued.
Previously, tactical armored vehicles were also deployed at seven locations where 'murder threat posts' were posted online or where many people gather, including Gangnam Station in Seoul, Seomyeon Station in Busan, Sejong Government Complex, Ori Station in Seongnam, the Jamboree site in Buan, Jeonbuk, Shinsegae Department Store in Gimhae, and Jeju Airport.
On this day, additional tactical armored vehicles were deployed at Suwon Station and Daejeon Station, as well as Daegu.
The Cyber Investigation Unit of the Daegu Metropolitan Police Agency stated that after the weapon rampage incident at Sillim Station in Gwanak-gu, Seoul, no reports or monitoring of 'murder threat' posts have been received in Daegu.
As of 7 a.m. on the 5th, at least 42 'murder threat' posts had been identified online since the 'Seohyeon Station weapon rampage incident' on the 3rd. The posts were found on online communities such as DC Inside, social media like Facebook, and anonymous university student communities.
