Walkable City - Livable City, Pedestrian-Centered Carbon Neutral Culture

Pohang City has registered the representative BI (Brand Identity) of the ‘Pohang GreenWay Project’ as a trademark with the Korean Intellectual Property Office and is focusing its administrative efforts on creating a walkable city based on the green infrastructure established through the GreenWay Project.

People-Centered... Pohang's Value and Brand as a Walkable Green City, Certified! Mayor Lee Gang-deok and the staff of the Greenway Promotion Division are commemorating the trademark registration of the representative BI of the 'Pohang GreenWay Project' with the Korean Intellectual Property Office and pledging to build green infrastructure and create a city that is pleasant for walking.

The ‘GreenWay Project’ is a policy that has been prioritized since 2016 to transform Pohang, once a gray industrial city, into a sustainable green ecological city where people, the city, ecology, culture, and industrial economy converge. It leverages Pohang’s geographical characteristics, where the urban area, sea, and forests harmonize.

Pohang City recently completed the trademark registration of the representative image of Pohang GreenWay with the Korean Intellectual Property Office to expand the GreenWay Project, which has achieved noticeable results such as an increase in green forest areas within the urban area’s sight, promote the green city brand, and secure exclusive rights to provide related information.

Furthermore, the city plans to devote all efforts to expanding and connecting forest trails and extending walkable paths to create a ‘pedestrian-centered carbon-neutral city.’

First, focusing on the representative project, Pohang Cheolgilsup (Railroad Forest), the city will create a living area GreenWay that connects every corner of the city by linking forest trails and waterways, including the construction of a pedestrian bridge on the Sangsaeng Forest Trail in front of Yugang Water Purification Plant, the creation of a pedestrian-centered street on Posco-daero, and the development of a coastal trail.

The ‘Sangsaeng Forest Trail Pedestrian Bridge Connection Project’ involves constructing a 140-meter-long overpass connecting the Railroad Forest in front of Yugang Water Purification Plant and the Hyeongsan River Public Bridge. The upper girder installation has been completed, and railing installation and deck paving are finished, with completion scheduled for the end of August.

The ‘Posco-daero Pedestrian-Centered Street’ project aims to create a pedestrian-centered street forest along a 2 km section of Posco-daero, connecting Idong Overpass, Ogwang Square, and Hyeongsan Rotary, thereby establishing a green network linking the Railroad Forest and the Hyeongsan River.

By transforming the existing car-centered urban space into a pedestrian-centered space, the plan is to create a city environment more convenient for walking or cycling.

This year, a pilot project will be conducted from in front of Hyeongsan Rotary Cooperative Hall, creating a differentiated specialized street through sidewalk maintenance, street tree design pruning, and planting of shade trees and ground cover plants.

Additionally, the city will utilize Pohang’s natural coastal scenery to connect the entire 112 km coastal trail, consisting of three courses from Jikyung-ri, Songra-myeon, Buk-gu to Duwon-ri, Janggi-myeon, by June next year. Disconnected sections of the trail will be linked through deck road installation and trail maintenance, and parking lots and other convenience facilities will be expanded.

Along with this, the city is spreading the foundation for barefoot walking by utilizing urban forests and waterfront spaces near residential areas created through the GreenWay Project.

As the barefoot walking population increases, the city has selected 30 barefoot-friendly paths, attracting visits from barefoot walking enthusiasts nationwide. In April, the ‘1st Korea Barefoot Walking Festival’ was held at Songdo Pine Forest Urban Forest and the coastal area, widely promoting the charm of Pohang as a walkable city.

Mayor Lee Kang-deok said, “Based on the achievements of the GreenWay Project, we have completed the BI trademark registration to enhance the urban brand of green city Pohang. We will expand green forests and create a walkable environment so that citizens can enjoy a more pleasant daily life and healthy living, building a people-centered eco-friendly city.”
