Second Canadian Prime Minister to Divorce While in Office, Following His Father
Justin Trudeau, the Prime Minister of Canada (51), announced his divorce from Sophie Gr?goire Trudeau (48). It comes after 18 years of marriage.
On the 2nd (local time), Prime Minister Trudeau shared the news of the divorce on his Instagram, stating, "Sophie and I want to share that after meaningful and difficult conversations, we have decided to divorce."
He added, "As always, we will remain close family with deep love and respect for each other and for everything we have built and will continue to build. We ask that our privacy and that of our children be respected for their happiness."
According to the BBC, the Canadian Prime Minister's Office released a statement saying that the Trudeau couple has agreed to divorce and that both are deeply committed to co-parenting their children.
They further stated, "They have taken all legal and ethical steps regarding the divorce decision and will continue to do so," adding, "They plan to spend a vacation together next week."
The Trudeaus married in Montreal in 2005 and have three children aged 15, 14, and 9. In recent years, it has been rare to see them appear together in public.
In 2014, Prime Minister Trudeau revealed in his autobiography, "Our marriage was not perfect and had difficult ups and downs, but Sophie remains my best friend, partner, and love," acknowledging the challenges in their marriage.
Meanwhile, Trudeau is the second Canadian Prime Minister to announce a divorce while in office. The first was his late father, Pierre Elliott Trudeau, who decided to separate after six years of marriage and divorced after 13 years.
