Seongdong-gu Wins Job Award for 9 Consecutive Years

Seongdong-gu (Mayor Jung Won-oh) won the Job Award for the ninth consecutive year for the first time in Seoul at the ‘2023 National Local Government Job Awards’ held at the Sejong Convention Center on the 2nd, securing 70 million KRW in incentive project funds.

Started in 2012, the ‘National Local Government Job Awards’ is the largest job evaluation system nationwide hosted by the Ministry of Employment and Labor. Currently, all 243 local governments nationwide participate to share and spread regional job achievements, establishing itself as Korea’s representative regional job awards ceremony.

Seongdong-gu, which received the Excellence Award in this evaluation, was recognized for its excellence in various fields, including continuous efforts and achievements in job creation since the 6th local government administration, realization of social values, generational inclusive jobs, and focused promotion of Seongdong-type ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) jobs.

In terms of job performance, it received favorable evaluations for ▲supporting the growth of new information and communication technology industries centered on knowledge industry centers in the Seongsu-dong area ▲supporting small business owners to overcome employment crises in regionally specialized traditional manufacturing industries ▲supporting social venture companies’ recovery from management difficulties and strengthening independence.

Additionally, to support the independence of social venture companies gathered mainly in Seongsu-dong, Seongdong-gu established the nation’s first ‘Seongdong ESG Impact Fund’ worth 5 billion KRW to invest in companies with future growth potential. Also, through the 7th Social Venture Innovation Competition and Expo held this year, it supports business development costs and opens new sales channels. It has made comprehensive efforts to create innovative jobs by supporting physical workspaces through operating affordable and safe commercial spaces.

In the area of improving job conditions, it has achieved remarkable results through pioneering policy initiatives. Starting with changing the term ‘career-interrupted women’ to ‘career-holding women’ and enacting the first support ordinance nationwide, it has taken the lead in eliminating unreasonable discriminatory perceptions against career-holding women and creating an environment where they can receive equal treatment in employment.

In March, research was conducted on the ‘Wage Survey and Wage System Reform Plan for Essential Workers’ to improve the quality of life for essential workers such as childcare teachers and care workers. Seongdong-gu is promoting policies to modernize their wage systems and provide universal guidelines, and as part of this, established the ‘Essential and Platform Workers’ Shelter’ in July to improve the poor working conditions of mobile workers whose workplaces are not fixed.

Mayor Jung Won-oh of Seongdong-gu said, “We have prioritized and worked hard on job creation, and I am extremely pleased to have achieved the milestone of winning the Job Award for nine consecutive years.” He added, “We will continue steady policies at the district level to revitalize the local economy and create jobs, doing our best to make Seongdong-gu a job-inclusive city where everyone can work happily.”
