Lotte Department Store announced on the 3rd that it will open the London Bagel Museum on the first floor of Jamsil Lotte World Mall on the 5th, consisting of a bakery and cafe of about 200㎡ (60 pyeong) and a production facility on the second floor of about 80㎡ (24 pyeong), marking the first time for a distributor to open such a store. The London Bagel Museum first debuted in September 2021 through its Anguk branch and is known as the origin of the ‘bagel open run,’ where hundreds of people line up even before opening. This is the first time the London Bagel Museum has entered a large-scale distribution facility.
The dessert craze is ongoing. Last year, Lotte Department Store’s dessert sales increased by 30% compared to the previous year, and from January to July this year, it recorded a high growth rate of over 15%. In particular, since last year, Lotte World Mall has attracted many ‘hot spots that make the MZ generation (Millennials + Generation Z) line up,’ drawing young ‘bread pilgrimage’ visitors (those who visit popular bakeries to taste signature products).
Lotte Department Store said it worked closely with the London Bagel Museum to carefully create intentional traces throughout the store that evoke the passage of time. The interior construction took more than six months. To make the furniture look worn as if hands and feet had brushed and touched the same spots for a long time, multiple layers of paint and sanding were applied, and corners were hammered to appear blunt. They deliberately created scratches and damages to capture a feeling as if 80 to 90 years had passed. The store’s walls were built using real old bricks, not fake ones, and the interior was decorated with premium teak wood.
The London Bagel Museum will also introduce two exclusive limited menus for Lotte World Mall. The Lotte World Mall limited ‘Truffle Pepper Sand’ is a menu featuring truffle cream cheese and pepper on an ‘Everything Bagel’ topped with roasted grains, delivering a savory and mild flavor with various grains, cream cheese, and truffle honey. Another limited menu, the ‘Truffle Bagel,’ is made using a self-developed twist shaping method. Butter and truffle oil are added to enhance the flavor. It features more than twice the twists during shaping compared to regular bagels, making it chewier.
Additionally, they sell various bagels such as the ‘Brick Lane Sandwich,’ which is a sesame bagel with cream cheese drizzled with honey; the ‘Potato Cheese Bagel,’ which contains mashed potatoes inside a plain bagel topped with cheddar cheese for a soft, chewy texture and savory taste; and the ‘Green Onion Pretzel Bagel,’ loved by various age groups, which combines a pretzel bagel with green onion cream cheese. They also offer about 70 types of sandwiches and beverages, as well as around 20 kinds of goods including eco bags and mugs.
Yoon Woo-wook, head of the food division at Lotte Department Store, said, “The news of the London Bagel Museum opening has been introduced on various social media platforms as a ‘must-visit reason for Jamsil’ for months, showing explosive reactions. We will continue to discover and present content that considers diverse customer tastes to establish Lotte World Mall’s unique identity.”
