Lee Su-hee, Mayor of Gangdong-gu, Inspects Civil Complaints Site at Gildong Station with Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon
On July 31, Inspected the Escalator Civil Complaints Site at Exit 2 of Gildong Station and Listened to Residents' Opinions
Requested Seoul City for Prompt Administrative Procedures and Preemptive Budget Reflection... Expecting Swift Progress of Construction
Gangdong-gu (Mayor Lee Su-hee) announced on the 31st that together with Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon, they inspected the civil complaints site at Gildong Station on Subway Line 5 and requested the prompt progress of administrative procedures and the reflection of project budget for the swift promotion of the escalator installation construction at Exit 2.
The inspection was attended by Mayor Lee Su-hee of Gangdong-gu, Mayor Oh Se-hoon of Seoul, and related officials, who listened to residents' opinions at the civil complaints site and confirmed the situation on site.
Gildong Station on Subway Line 5 is used by about 15,000 citizens daily, but due to structural issues inside the station, there has been no escalator connecting the underground first-floor concourse to the ground-level exits, causing continuous complaints from residents about inconvenience.
In particular, Exits 2 and 3 require users to move only by stairs to the ground level, causing serious inconvenience for transportation-vulnerable groups such as the disabled, pregnant women, and the elderly.
To improve this, Gangdong-gu requested 100 million KRW in 2022 from Seoul City for a feasibility study on the installation of escalators at Gildong Station. As a result of the feasibility study conducted by Seoul Metro starting in February this year, it was confirmed that if the preliminary condition of acquiring private land is resolved, the installation of an escalator at Exit 2 of Gildong Station is technically possible. Preparations are underway to start design services for construction from August this year.
During this site inspection, Mayor Lee Su-hee emphasized to Mayor Oh Se-hoon that the escalator installation at Gildong Station must be promoted promptly and requested active support from Seoul City.
Mayor Lee Su-hee of Gangdong-gu stated, “Gildong Station has a large number of users and many transportation-vulnerable residents such as the elderly living nearby, so the escalator installation is urgent.” She added, “Although there are challenges to resolve such as acquiring private land before actual construction, we will actively cooperate with related organizations including Seoul City and Seoul Metro to improve residents' inconvenience.”
