Pet Dog Remains Near Home Following Landslide

A dog that lost its owner due to a landslide during heavy rain was rescued after 12 days. Until its rescue, the dog seemed to stay only near the house, as if searching for its owner.


According to the animal rights organization CARE on the 28th, a landslide occurred on the morning of the 15th in Seodong-ri, Chunyang-myeon, Bonghwa-gun, Gyeongbuk Province, killing two people, including a woman in her 60s, Ms. A. Of the two companion dogs Ms. A raised, one died and the other was seriously injured in its leg.

The dog was rescued during the accident response and entrusted to the village hall, but it disappeared because it was not tied up.


Then, after 12 days, a neighbor found and reported the dog hiding near its original home site. The dog stayed around the house that had vanished without a trace due to the landslide.


CARE stated on Facebook, “The dog that was buried and rescued in Bonghwa, where the landslide occurred, must have gone through a great shock as its house collapsed, its companion died, and its owners passed away, yet it seems to have found its way back home again. A neighbor passing by found it hiding behind a tree in the empty lot of a barren mountain where nothing remained.”

After receiving a rescue request from a resident, CARE arrived at the site on the 27th and took the dog to Seoul. CARE gave it a new name, ‘Bonghwa.’


The organization wrote, “Bonghwa’s hind legs were buried, its leg was broken, and it had deep wounds on its belly. Dragging its dangling leg, it must have gone back to its home on that high mountain and waited in the empty lot for its owner who never returned.”


The resident who reported the dog to the animal rescue organization said, “Ms. A, who passed away, loved the dogs very much during her lifetime. I felt heavy-hearted, but saving the dog Ms. A cherished brings some comfort.”
