Pittsburgh, USA, Establishes 'Pohang Mugunghwa-gil' Memorial Park for Korean War Veterans On the 27th (local time), Pohang City held a completion ceremony for the 'Pohang Mugunghwa Road' at the Korean War Veterans Memorial Park located in North Shore Riverfront Park, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA.

The event was attended by more than 200 people, including the Pohang City delegation led by Vice Mayor Kim Nam-il, who is visiting the United States, representatives from the U.S. federal government, Allegheny County, the City of Pittsburgh and its City Council, the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Korean Association, the Korean War Veterans Association, and the Pittsburgh Regional Alliance (PRA).

The ceremony was held to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Korean War armistice and to honor the sacrifice and dedication of Korean War veterans by celebrating the completion of the 'Pohang Mugunghwa Road' created by Pohang City.

The Pohang Mugunghwa Road was established by planting Mugunghwa (Rose of Sharon) trees along a stretch of approximately 50 meters. It was promoted as a commissioned project by the Pittsburgh Metropolitan Korean Association (President Jo Mi-ran), which has a business agreement with Pohang City. The Pittsburgh Metropolitan Korean Association supports Koreans in Pittsburgh and carries out Korean War veterans memorial projects.

At the event, Jake Pawlak, Vice Mayor of Pittsburgh, read a declaration proclaiming July 27, 2023, as Pohang Day to commemorate the creation of the Pohang Mugunghwa Road.

The Korean War Veterans Memorial Park, where the Pohang Mugunghwa Road was established, was built by the Western Pennsylvania Korean War Veterans Association in 1999 after nine years of fundraising to honor U.S. soldiers who participated in the Korean War. Among the 1.78 million U.S. military personnel who served in the Korean War, 400,000 were from Western Pennsylvania, representing the highest proportion in the United States.

Jack Rosenberger (89), chairman of the Western Pennsylvania Veterans Association who served as a driver during his three years of service in the Korean War, expressed his gratitude to Pohang City, saying, "It is heartwarming to see the Republic of Korea overcome the pain of war 70 years ago and achieve remarkable development. We are deeply moved that you have not forgotten us and have created the Mugunghwa Road."

The Western Pennsylvania Veterans Association was established in 1991 and has about 150 members with an average age of 80 to 90 years. They also run a scholarship program for Korean American youth who clean the Korean War Veterans Memorial Park.

Vice Mayor Kim Nam-il said, "Through the Pohang Mugunghwa Road, we will widely promote Pohang City in Pittsburgh and continue various civilian exchanges, including exchanges between descendants of Korean War veterans from both cities, to strengthen the global network."
