Nowon-gu, Various Special Experiences and Exhibitions for Children Bulamsan Butterfly Garden Grasshopper Experience

Nowon-gu (Mayor Oh Seung-rok) has prepared a variety of exhibitions and experience programs for students on summer vacation.

Nowon, the oldest educational special zone in Seoul, has established various infrastructures where children can enhance their abilities through experiences in culture, sports, and basic science. We introduce Bulamsan Butterfly Garden, Nowon Train Village, and Nowon Astronomy and Space Science Museum, which have prepared special programs for the vacation.

Learning about Insects at Bulamsan Butterfly Garden, This Year’s Focus: Grasshoppers!

Located within Bulamsan Healing Town, the ‘Butterfly Garden’ maintains a constant temperature of 25℃ year-round, allowing visitors to observe and experience the ecology of living butterflies in all four seasons. In addition, a special insect exhibition is planned every vacation to provide children with various sights and educational and experiential programs.

This year, the ‘World Grasshopper Special Exhibition’ will be held. A total of 173 specimens of 62 rare grasshopper species from Korea and around the world, including the Indonesian Riokok Giant Katydid, will be displayed. The special exhibition is held in the lobby on the 1st floor of Bulamsan Butterfly Garden until August 27 and is open free of charge to anyone without prior reservation from Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

During the special exhibition period, experience and educational programs will also be operated. The ‘Insect Badge Making’ experience is held free of charge in the program room on the 2nd floor of the Butterfly Garden, twice a day for two hours each at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. The ‘Insect Academy - Grasshopper Music Box Making,’ conducted by professional instructors, is targeted at elementary school students and runs for one hour at 12:30 p.m. from Tuesday to Friday. Students wishing to participate must make a reservation through the Seoul Public Service Reservation system and pay an education fee of 5,000 KRW per person.

Last summer vacation, the ‘World Rhinoceros Beetle Special Exhibition’ attracted over 15,000 visitors, and the winter vacation ‘World Dragonfly Special Exhibition’ saw participation from over 21,000 people.

After the Swiss Village, Now a Time Machine? Nowon Train Village’s 2nd Floor ‘Unique Train Exhibition Hall’ Opens

Opened last November within Hwarangdae Railroad Park, the ‘Nowon Train Village - Swiss Hall’ covers a total floor area of 444.71㎡ and exhibits a diorama (scale model) meticulously crafted to resemble the Alpine peaks and Swiss cities, a world-renowned tourist destination, on the first floor. It reproduces various Swiss landscapes from sunrise to sunset, with 17 model trains running at a 1/87 scale, providing diverse attractions.

Additionally, the district has added a ‘Unique Train Exhibition Hall’ on the 2nd floor, which was previously used as an observatory. It showcases three types of trains that have disappeared into history: the Gustav Rail Cannon, the Shay Steam Locomotive, and the Train Turntable Garage. In particular, great effort was made to realistically depict and operate these unique trains that actually existed through thorough expert verification.

Nowon Train Village, including the Unique Train Exhibition Hall, operates from Tuesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., except on Lunar New Year and Chuseok holidays. Admission is on a first-come, first-served basis without prior reservation. Admission fees are 2,000 KRW for adults and 1,000 KRW for youth and children. Nowon residents, seniors, persons with disabilities, and veterans receive a 50% discount. Since the opening of the Swiss Hall, Nowon Train Village has welcomed over 71,000 visitors.

Nowon Astronomy and Space Science Museum, Exciting Summer Vacation Fun at the Science Museum!

Nowon Astronomy and Space Science Museum has provided various learning opportunities such as exhibitions, education, and star and solar observations to local children and adolescents, attracting over 32,000 visitors in the first half of this year alone. Especially, the 3rd floor permanent exhibition hall ‘Big History Hall’ was remodeled in March this year to reflect the latest trends in space science, planning exhibitions that stimulate visual, auditory, and tactile senses. For summer vacation, programs combining exhibition viewing and hands-on making experiences are being offered at the Big History Hall.

Until July 30, visitors can participate in ‘Solar System Garland Making’; from August 1 to 6, ‘Wind-Powered Space Top Making’; and from August 8 to 13, ‘Rubber Band Rocket Making’ experiences.

Each session accommodates 10 participants on a first-come, first-served basis. On weekdays (Tuesday to Friday), programs run six times a day at 30-minute intervals from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and on weekends, nine times a day until 4 p.m. (not operating from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.). On-site reservations are made via tablets available at the 3rd floor information desk of the science museum.

Meanwhile, the district operates water play areas throughout neighborhoods so residents can enjoy water activities close to home while avoiding the midsummer heat. There are six park facility-type water play areas (Gongneung-dong Park, Hannae Park, Deulgukhwa Children’s Park, Netiul Park, Danggogae Park, Biseokgol Park), four neighborhood air bounce-type water play areas (Haebaragi Children’s Park, Satgatbong Park, Sanggye Park, Galul Park), and Nowon Water Park (Seoul National University of Science and Technology Sports Complex), totaling 11 locations opened this month. Since opening in July, about 30,000 people have visited.

Mayor Oh Seung-rok said, “We have prepared various programs so that children on summer vacation can go outside and spend meaningful and enjoyable time. We will continue to do our best to develop diverse content so that children can develop their intellect, virtue, and physical strength evenly.”
