Nam-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, is preparing a variety of commemorative projects in mid-next month to honor the victims of the Japanese military sexual slavery, and will hold a film review writing and drawing contest related to comfort women and the anti-Japanese movement for youth in the Gwangju area.
According to Nam-gu on the 27th, the commemorative projects for the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Japanese Military Sexual Slavery will be held in various locations throughout the district, centered around Yangnim-dong, for one week from the 9th to the 15th of next month.
First, the film review writing and drawing contest related to Japanese military comfort women and the anti-Japanese movement will be held until the 3rd of next month.
Any youth aged between 9 and 19 residing in Gwangju can participate.
For the reviews, participants watch a film related to Japanese military comfort women or the anti-Japanese movement and submit a review within 1,000 characters. For drawings, participants can submit either an 8-panel comic or one A3-sized poster drawn by hand.
Submissions are accepted via email to the contest organizer, and the application form can be downloaded from the public notice section on the Nam-gu Office website.
Outstanding works in each category will be awarded the Peace Prize, Human Rights Prize, and Unification Prize.
In addition, Nam-gu will hold traveling film screenings at 7 p.m. on the 9th and 11th at Mulbit Neighborhood Park in Nodae-dong and the Bando Yubora Apartment Community Center in Wolsan-dong.
At these venues, the film "I Can Speak," inspired by the comfort women grandmothers, will be screened.
Also, on the 11th, a walking event along the Modern History and Culture Trail in Yangnim-dong will be held with Korean history teacher Seobu-won from Salesio High School.
Furthermore, on the 12th from 4 p.m., the 6th Nam-gu Peace Festival commemorating the Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Japanese Military Sexual Slavery will take place around the Peace Statue of the Girl and the Craft Specialty Street Lawn Plaza in Yangnim-dong.
