A man in his 20s who hit a pedestrian while driving under the influence and then made a false report has been referred to the prosecution.
According to Yangsan Police Station in Gyeongnam on the 27th, Mr. A hit a man in his 50s, Mr. B, on a road in Sangbuk-myeon, Yangsan-si, around 12:30 a.m. on the 17th while driving under the influence.
After the accident, Mr. A called 119 but told the paramedics who arrived at the scene that “Mr. B fell down drunk.”
At the time, Mr. B was indeed intoxicated but was conscious and had no significant injuries, and it is known that he did not mention that he had been involved in a traffic accident.
Accordingly, the rescue workers considered Mr. B simply intoxicated and handed him over to the police.
Later, Mr. B told the police who had escorted him, “I will go home on my own,” sent them away, did not enter his house, and was found dead in front of his home around 9:30 a.m. the next day.
An autopsy confirmed that Mr. B died from a cerebral hemorrhage.
Mr. A confessed to the crime while giving witness statements about the accident, and the police referred Mr. A to the prosecution on the 26th with an opinion to indict him on charges of hit-and-run causing death.
A police official said, “It was investigated that Mr. A made a false report to the paramedics to hide the fact that he was driving under the influence,” adding, “The exact cause of Mr. B’s death will be determined after the results from the National Forensic Service are released.”
