"Dismissal of Impeachment Is Not a Get-Out-of-Jail-Free Card for the Itaewon Disaster"
Lee Jeong-mi, leader of the Justice Party, expressed regret on the 25th over the Constitutional Court's dismissal of the impeachment motion against Minister of the Interior and Safety Lee Sang-min.
On the afternoon of the same day, the Constitutional Court unanimously ruled to dismiss the impeachment motion submitted by the National Assembly in the impeachment trial of Minister Lee Sang-min.
Regarding this, Lee posted on Facebook, stating, "The National Assembly's impeachment motion was a process to hold accountable the serious legal, political, and moral responsibilities for the large-scale disaster caused by the 'absence of the state,'" and added, "At the same time, it was a warning from the people against a heartless government where no one takes responsibility for the large-scale disaster that occurred in the heart of the capital of the Republic of Korea."
She continued, "Minister Lee was effectively the person responsible for the 10·29 Itaewon disaster, which was a case of 'government mismanagement,'" and criticized, "After the incident, he repeatedly made inappropriate remarks about the circumstances and causes of the disaster, inflicting irreparable wounds on the victims, bereaved families, and those affected."
She then stated, "Just because the Constitutional Court dismissed the impeachment motion today does not mean that President Yoon Seok-yeol or Minister Lee have been absolved of responsibility for the Itaewon disaster," and asserted, "The people have already made a political judgment."
Lee emphasized, "Whether Minister Lee will continue to live a useless life, merely bearing the title of minister while wasting taxpayers' money, or humbly accept the political judgment that he is no longer qualified to serve as minister, is up to him," and added, "The enactment of the 10·29 Itaewon Disaster Special Act has become even more important. We will advance history that is regressing through proper fact-finding and the establishment of measures to prevent recurrence."
