Gwangjin-gu Removes Traffic Island at Jayang Intersection...Enhances Pedestrian Safety and Reduces Accident Risks
Comprehensive Improvement of Traffic Environment at Jayang Intersection, Securing Safety by Removing Accident-Prone Traffic Island
Full Effort to Prevent Accidents Including Crosswalk Expansion and Installation of Right-Turn-Only Lane
Sidewalk Width Expanded to 3.5m, Increasing Space Utilization...Various Cultural and Artistic Performances Planned
Gwangjin-gu (Mayor Kim Kyung-ho) has decisively strengthened pedestrian safety by removing the traffic island at Jayang Intersection, a known accident-prone area.
This section is a major intersection leading to Jayang Traditional Market and a traffic-congested area with a pedestrian volume reaching 1,000 during peak times.
However, concerns over safety accidents have been continuously raised due to narrow crosswalks, sudden right turns, and jaywalking.
In response, the district swiftly proceeded with the traffic environment improvement project at Jayang Intersection. After about nine months of effort since last November, the old and hazardous area around Jayang Intersection has been transformed into a safe resting space for residents.
First, the traffic island located on the southwest side of Jayang Intersection was completely removed. As a result, the crosswalk width was expanded to 4m and the sidewalk width to 3.5m, greatly enhancing pedestrian convenience and preventing pedestrian accidents caused by right-turning vehicles.
Additionally, to prevent vehicle congestion caused by the removal of the traffic island, a right-turn-only lane was newly installed. This is expected to open a new route in an area that had severe congestion due to vehicles entering the north end of Jamsil Bridge.
Furthermore, efforts were made to prevent accidents by installing additional lane delineators and improving water pooling on crosswalks. The widened sidewalk space will also be utilized as a small plaza to host various cultural and artistic performances such as busking.
Mayor Kim Kyung-ho said, “With this improvement project, the area around Jayang Intersection, which had a high risk of pedestrian accidents, is expected to become a safe and pleasant resting place,” and added, “We will continuously strive to create a street environment where everyone can walk with peace of mind.”
