The Single-Use Product Zero Challenge is a nationwide eco-friendly campaign started by the Ministry of Environment in February this year, with the purpose of "reducing the use of single-use products in daily life and increasing the use of reusable products." It is conducted in a relay format where participants upload photos showing hand gestures symbolizing 'single-use product zero' on social networking services (SNS) and recommend others to continue the challenge using hashtags (#).
On the 21st, Vice Chairman Kim Sang-hyun posted a photo on Lotte Department Store and Lotte Mart SNS accounts showing the hand gesture symbolizing the zero challenge along with a promise to reduce single-use products and increase the use of reusable products. He was nominated by Dongwon Group Vice Chairman Park In-gu on the 14th and participated in the challenge. He nominated Kim Ki-won, CEO of McDonald’s Korea, as the next participant.
Lotte Shopping continuously implements activities such as plogging (picking up trash while jogging) and beachcombing (coastal cleanup), which customers and employees can participate in, through its representative ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) campaign called RE:EARTH. They have also introduced uniforms made from fabric recycled from PET bottles and fruit packaging containers made from 100% recycled plastic. Employees participate in environmental campaigns such as using personal tumblers instead of single-use products. This year, they are refining the carbon neutrality roadmap established last year, and in March, they became the first retailer to join the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), participating in international efforts to limit the global average temperature rise to within 1.5 degrees Celsius.
Along with environmental protection activities, they continue sharing activities to help those in need due to war, disasters, and natural calamities both domestically and internationally. Recently, they provided emergency relief supplies to the Gyeongbuk, Chungbuk, and Jeonbuk regions affected by heavy rain. In March, they also conducted a donation campaign involving customers, employees, and the company to support victims in T?rkiye and Syria.
