A man in his 30s who killed his ex-girlfriend with a weapon in the hallway of an apartment in Incheon committed the crime despite having a court-issued restraining order against him.
On the 17th, the Nonhyeon Police Station in Incheon announced that they are investigating a man in his 30s, identified as Mr. A, on charges of murder and violation of the Act on the Punishment of Stalking Crimes.
Mr. A is accused of stabbing and killing his ex-girlfriend, a woman in her 30s identified as Ms. B, in the hallway of an apartment in Nonhyeon-dong, Namdong-gu, Incheon, at around 5:54 a.m. that day.
During the incident, Ms. B’s mother, who tried to stop the attack, was injured in both hands by the weapon wielded by Mr. A. After the crime, Mr. A attempted self-harm and is currently receiving treatment at a hospital.
Ms. B’s mother told the police, "My daughter was stabbed after encountering Mr. A in front of the house on her way to work." She then fled inside the house where her young granddaughter was and reported the incident to the police.
Investigations revealed that Ms. B had reported Mr. A to the Hanam Police Station in Gyeonggi Province in February for dating violence, and on the 2nd of last month, she filed another complaint against him for violating the Stalking Punishment Act.
While under investigation for stalking, Mr. A was caught in the act on the 9th of last month after wandering around Ms. B’s residence and was released after four hours of questioning.
Despite receiving a provisional order from the Incheon District Court on the 10th of last month, instructing him not to approach within 100 meters of Ms. B or contact her via telecommunications, Mr. A committed the crime.
Meanwhile, Ms. B reportedly returned a smartwatch she had received when she filed the stalking complaint against Mr. A directly to the police station on the 13th.
A police official explained, "At that time, the victim returned the smartwatch saying, ‘There has been no contact from Mr. A so far, and it seems unlikely he will cause harm in the future.’"
