The 6th Temporary Meeting Scheduled for the 17th in Suncheon, Jeonnam, Postponed with Unanimous Consent of All City and Provincial Chairpersons

Priority Given to Assessing Nationwide Heavy Rain Damage and Establishing Countermeasures, Supporting Rapid Recovery

Matters Requiring Government Support Will Be Actively Proposed at the Council Level

The Council of Chairpersons of Provincial Councils of the Republic of Korea (Chairperson Kim Hyun-gi, Chairperson of Seoul Metropolitan Council) decided to postpone the temporary meeting scheduled to be held on the 17th in Suncheon, Jeonnam.


In the face of severe property and human damage caused by nationwide heavy rainfall, all city and provincial chairpersons agreed with Chairperson Kim Hyun-gi's proposal that visiting the affected local residents to share their pain and establishing damage countermeasures should take precedence over holding the temporary meeting.


Chairperson Bae Han-cheol of Gyeongsangbuk-do Provincial Council stated, “The top priority is to promptly manage the sites where numerous casualties occurred due to landslides.” □ Chairperson Hwang Young-ho of Chungcheongbuk-do Provincial Council also expressed, “We will do our best to rescue people affected by the flooding of the underground passage in Osong area and devise follow-up measures.” - 2 - □ Chairperson Guk Ju-young of Jeollabuk-do Provincial Council proposed, “Let us unite our efforts to minimize damage and restore the disaster sites as soon as possible,” and all city and provincial chairpersons reached a consensus to do their utmost in flood recovery and establishing compensation measures for residents.


Chairperson Kim Hyun-gi stated, “The damage and residents’ demands collected through site visits by each city and provincial chairperson will be encouraged to be addressed by the respective local governments. For matters requiring government support, the council will actively propose them at the council level.”


The Council of Chairpersons of Provincial Councils of the Republic of Korea holds temporary meetings on a rotating basis every month by city and province to discuss current issues aimed at strengthening the status of local councils and to review agenda items such as proposals to the government for the development of local autonomy involving the 17 provincial councils.
