Jeonnam Province Integrates Mokpo-Muan Taxi Transport Service Areas... Resolving 17 Years of Conflict

Jeonnam Province will integrate the taxi transportation business districts of Mokpo and Muan. This will resolve a 17-year-old conflict.

According to the province on the 16th, out of 1,577 eligible voters among transportation workers, 1,523 participated (voter turnout 79%), with approval rates of 67% (748 people) in Mokpo and 52% (70 people) in Muan.

Within this month, Jeonnam Province, Mokpo City, Muan County administrative agencies, and representatives of transportation workers will draft an integration agreement. Following this, taxi transportation business districts will be integrated and operated simultaneously with a fare increase.

Jeonnam Province Integrates Mokpo-Muan Taxi Transport Service Areas... Resolving 17 Years of Conflict

Over the past 17 years, Jeonnam Province, Mokpo City, and Muan County have attempted integration dozens of times, but agreements repeatedly failed due to conflicts over the scope of the Mokpo-Muan taxi transportation business district integration and the total taxi license quota system.

In response, the province proposed a partial integration plan for the Mokpo-Muan taxi transportation business districts and the application of a unified fare system for Mokpo-Muan taxis, deciding to determine integration through a referendum among transportation workers.

With the integration of the entire Mokpo and Muan's Naman New Town (including Oryong District) taxi business districts, Mokpo taxis will be able to operate in Naman New Town, and Muan taxis will also be able to operate throughout Mokpo. This will resolve unnecessary business district disputes and is expected to help alleviate transportation inconveniences for users in the taxi-shortage areas of Naman Oryong District.

Yoo Ho-gyu, Director of the Construction and Transportation Bureau of Jeonnam Province, said, “We will do our best to finalize the business district integration agreement to resolve inconveniences for taxi users and promote the mutual development of the taxi industries in both cities and counties.”
