Musk Establishes 'xAI' to Rival OpenAI
He once co-founded OpenAI, parted ways, and led calls to halt AI development?but now he’s back. Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, has launched an AI company called 'xAI.' Upon launching xAI, Musk swept up top talent from competitors, including Igor Babushkin, a former engineer at Google DeepMind; Greg Yang from Microsoft; and Zibi Ma, who studied under Geoffrey Hinton, one of the four AI pioneers and a professor at the University of Toronto. The industry is watching closely to see if xAI can become a true rival to OpenAI. Many believe Musk’s business trajectory has been a 'roadmap' for AI. Twitter, which has accumulated vast amounts of data for AI training, is a powerful asset. Hardware ready to utilize AI as the brain, such as Tesla electric vehicles and the humanoid robot Optimus, is already in place.
AI Passes Medical Licensing Exam, Now Hired by Hospital
Google’s AI chatbot has now entered the world’s top medical institutions. The Mayo Clinic in the U.S. is testing Google’s medical AI 'Med-PaLM 2.' Med-PaLM 2 previously gained recognition by passing the U.S. medical licensing mock exam. At the Mayo Clinic, it assists human medical staff by examining patients. When patients input their conditions via text, the AI analyzes the information to diagnose diseases or provide medical opinions.
China’s Regulation: Regulatory or Not?
China has announced its first regulatory proposal on generative AI. It clearly stated that it will foster the AI industry as long as it aligns with socialist values. To launch generative AI services, developers must conduct security checks and obtain government approval. This applies to foreign companies operating in China as well. However, if the business operates outside China, even domestic companies are not subject to regulation. This matches the draft announced in April. On the other hand, the final version removed provisions imposing fines up to 100,000 yuan (about 18 million KRW) or requiring content correction within three months for violations. The draft required that not only generated content but also AI training data reflect socialist values, but the final version only includes this as a declarative statement. Amid fierce competition with the U.S. for AI leadership, the stance is seen as leaning toward actively supporting technological development.
US FTC Targets OpenAI After Big Tech
The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has launched an investigation into whether OpenAI violated consumer protection laws. They requested information on ▲cases of harm caused by ChatGPT providing false information and how OpenAI responded ▲what data was used to train ChatGPT and how it was collected ▲how ChatGPT’s personal data leak incidents occurred. The FTC oversees both antitrust and consumer protection laws, but this investigation focuses on whether false information caused reputational damage. Some critics argue that the FTC is overstepping its authority by conducting investigations aimed at controlling AI companies.
Generative AI Boom Brings Hollywood to a Halt
Lawsuits and strikes related to generative AI continue unabated. American comedian and writer Sarah Silverman has filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against OpenAI and Meta, claiming ChatGPT trained on her copyrighted works without permission. She asked ChatGPT to summarize her works, but the responses indicated that it had to have seen the original works to answer as it did. Meanwhile, actors and broadcasters in Hollywood have declared a strike. They demand protection of actors’ rights amid AI adoption, fearing that AI trained on their images and voices without consent could replace them. This follows the writers’ strike in May, putting Hollywood at risk of a complete shutdown.
