Oh Seung-rok, Mayor of Nowon District, Chairs Emergency Meeting to Inspect Heavy Rain Damage on the 14th
Oh Seung-rok, Mayor of Nowon District, chaired an emergency countermeasure meeting at 9 a.m. on the 14th in the mayor’s office.
This meeting was urgently convened with the attendance of related departments, including the Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters task force, to inspect the damage situation and response system caused by the heavy rain last night within the district.
From the 13th to 9 a.m. on the 14th, the cumulative rainfall in Nowon District was 197.5 mm, the highest amount of rain in Seoul.
The reported damage cases include ▲13 cases of poor drainage ▲2 cases of tree uprooting ▲2 cases of flooding damage such as backflow in private drainage pipes ▲1 case of soil runoff at Yeongchuksan ▲2 cases of road subsidence, totaling 19 cases.
These were promptly communicated to the relevant departments (agencies), and recovery has been completed or is underway. Currently, all four rivers in the area (Jungnangcheon, Danghyeoncheon, Uicheon, Mokdongcheon) are closed to access.
During the meeting, the mayor urged strengthening patrols of rivers and facilities under departmental jurisdiction, and instructed to prepare measures and support not only for flood control of mountains and rivers but also for ’banjiha‘ (semi-basement) house flooding caused by this heavy rain.
Also, considering user safety, the opening of Nowon Water Park (inside Seoul National University of Science and Technology), four air-bounce type water play areas, and Biseokgol Park water playground scheduled for the 15th, as well as the operation of the Healing Refrigerator, will be postponed for five days until the 20th.
The district issued a level 2 emergency flood and wind disaster countermeasure alert at 9 p.m. on the 13th, and 73 members of the headquarters and task force, along with half of the Dong Community Center staff, conducted emergency duty until the morning of the 14th.
Mayor Oh Seung-rok stated, “Since the flooding in some areas in 2018, we have prepared every year to prevent major damage,” and added, “Safety preparedness can never be overemphasized. We will do our best to maintain facilities through continuous inspections of vulnerable areas to prevent flood damage.”
