160mm Heavy Rain in Incheon Over Two Days... 33 Reports of Damage Including Wall Collapse

The heavy rain warning issued for Incheon has been lifted, but with up to 163mm of rain falling on the 13th and 14th, damages such as collapsed walls and consecutive traffic accidents occurred.


According to Incheon City, a total of 33 reports of rain damage were received by 6 a.m. on the 14th. By type of damage, there were 14 cases of flooding, 8 cases of fallen trees, and 1 case of landslide, with no casualties reported.


On the afternoon of the previous day, a vacant house in Hakik-dong, Michuhol-gu collapsed, and the wall of an officetel in nearby Sungui-dong also collapsed.


Additionally, a power outage occurred on the section from Incheon Gyeyang Station to Seoul Station on the Airport Railroad, causing the operation of five trains to be suspended for about five minutes. The Airport Railroad identified that the power supply was disrupted due to lightning strikes.

Traffic accidents on the rainy roads also occurred consecutively. At around 12:26 a.m. on the 14th, a passenger car traveling from Jangsu IC to Songnae on the Metropolitan Area 1st Circular Expressway crashed into the central divider. Fortunately, there were no casualties, but two lanes were controlled for about an hour to handle the accident.


About 20 minutes later, at a point approximately 50 meters from the accident site, a 3.5-ton truck overturned, and the driver in his 40s received treatment at a hospital. At Jangsu IC, at 3:04 a.m., a passenger car also crashed into a guardrail, but there were no casualties.


By 6 a.m. on the 14th, the cumulative rainfall by district was highest in Yeonsu-gu with 163mm, followed by Bupyeong-gu with 158mm, Jung-gu with 143mm, and Ganghwa-gun with 137mm.


The heavy rain warning issued for Incheon was lifted at 5 a.m. that day, and the Seoul Metropolitan Weather Administration forecasted an additional 30 to 100mm of rain in Incheon and the metropolitan area until the 15th.
