Ministry of Education Announces Designation of New Education Internationalization Special Zones
Park Byung-gyu, Mayor of Gwangsan District Office in Gwangju Metropolitan City, expressed his welcome regarding Gwangsan District being designated as the 3rd phase (2023-2027) Education Internationalization Special Zone, stating, “Gwangsan has once again laid the foundation to leap onto the global stage.”
According to Gwangsan District on the 12th, the Ministry of Education designated and announced 12 basic local governments, including Gwangsan District, as new Education Internationalization Special Zones on the same day.
Mayor Park said, “The selection as an Education Internationalization Special Zone is a great achievement accomplished through the united efforts of Gwangsan District, Gwangju Metropolitan City (Mayor Kang Ki-jung), Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education (Superintendent Lee Jeong-seon), regional politicians including National Assembly member Min Hyung-bae, and the aspirations of the citizens,” adding, “It proves that Gwangsan District is the optimal place for nurturing global talents, equipped with diverse cultural resources accumulated by citizens of various nationalities living together, a foundation for coexistence, and abundant international education infrastructure.”
With the special zone designation, Gwangsan District will be able to promote various projects aimed at fostering world-class professionals, enhancing national international competitiveness, and promoting balanced regional development, including multicultural understanding, global citizenship education, and foreign language programs.
The district plans to concretize its project plans focusing on three specialized projects?▲ nurturing global citizens ▲ cultivating global educators ▲ attracting overseas talents?through close cooperation with Gwangju City and the City Office of Education.
Mayor Park stated, “With the designation as an Education Internationalization Special Zone, Gwangsan has taken a big step forward as a city bearing the future of South Korea beyond Gwangju,” and added, “Through collaboration with Gwangju City and the City Office of Education, we will support youth with migration backgrounds to grow into future leaders and do our best to enhance the capabilities and status of Gwangsan as an international city.”
