Dongdaemun-gu Operates 'Healing Refrigerator' Cooling Shelter for Heat Relief

Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Lee Pil-hyung) announced that from the 10th until the end of August, in preparation for the summer heatwave, water bottle refrigerators will be installed at outdoor heat relief shelters to prioritize distributing bottled water to vulnerable groups such as the elderly, disabled, and homeless residents.

The water bottle refrigerators have been installed at a total of 7 outdoor heat relief shelters, including major walking trails along Jungnangcheon, Jeongneungcheon, Seongbukcheon, and Baebongsan Park.

Bottled water is prepared three times a day (9 a.m., 1 p.m., and 5 p.m.), and to prevent indiscriminate use, members of the district’s volunteer disaster prevention team distribute one bottle per person.

This year, due to the early arrival of hot weather, the operation period of the water bottle refrigerators was advanced by about 15 days compared to last year, and label-free bottled water, with plastic labels removed from PET bottles, is supplied.

This is expected to facilitate recycling and reduce waste generated from plastic label vinyl.

Lee Pil-hyung, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, stated, “We will do our best to ensure that residents can spend a safe and healthy summer through the installation of water bottle refrigerators,” and urged residents to actively participate in separating and recycling empty PET bottles after drinking.

In preparation for the heatwave, Dongdaemun-gu operates 170 heatshade shelters. During the heatwave period, 148 locations including senior centers, comprehensive welfare centers for the elderly, and community service centers have been designated and operated as heat relief shelters for vulnerable groups. For more details about shelter operations, please contact Donghaenggwa or the Safety and Disaster Division.
