40 Fires Result in 2 Deaths... Property Damage Increases by 168.2%
Jindo Fire Station in Jeollanam-do announced on the 6th that, according to the analysis of fire statistics for the first half of this year, there were 40 fire incidents resulting in 2 deaths and property damage amounting to 432,732,000 KRW.
In the first half of last year, there were no fatalities, but this year there have been 2 deaths, and property damage has increased by 168.2%.
Although the number of fire incidents decreased, property damage increased due to ship fires in Uisin-myeon, Jindo-gun, and a yard fire in Uisin-myeon in March. Human casualties increased due to electrical fires in homes and careless handling during forest fires.
Jindo Fire Station, considering the characteristics of agricultural and fishing villages, advises that discarded fishing gear and other waste should be disposed of at designated locations, and prohibits the use of fire in forest areas. They are conducting forest fire prevention campaigns on hiking trails and especially warn that during summer, the use of cooling devices surges, leading to frequent electrical fires such as outdoor unit fires. They urge caution when using cooling appliances.
Kim Gwang-seon, Chief of Jindo Fire Station, said, “Since the opening of Jindo Fire Station last year, the number of fires has decreased, but property and human damages have increased. We will do our best in prevention and response activities in the second half of the year.” He added, “With the organizational restructuring of the Jeonnam Fire Headquarters, the Jindo Fire Station Field Response Team has been newly established, and manpower and equipment have been expanded to take the lead in protecting the safety and property of the residents.”
