The Korea Communications Commission announced on the 6th that the enforcement date of the revised Enforcement Decree of the Broadcasting Act, which separates the collection of TV license fees (KBS·EBS) from electricity bills, will be "immediate upon promulgation."
Accordingly, from the moment the revision process is completed, failure to pay the TV license fee (2,500 KRW per month) will not be considered as non-payment of electricity charges. There will be no disadvantages such as power disconnection.
The KCC explained, "A minimum preparation period is necessary to completely separate the issuance of TV license fee bills," and added, "Before that, we will inform the public about the implementation of separate collection by adding a notice phrase." The specific method of separate collection and the issue of cost burden will be determined through consultation between Korea Electric Power Corporation and KBS.
The KCC stated, "We will continue to do our best solely to enhance the rights and interests of the public and to prevent reckless management of public broadcasting." The revised decree is expected to be promulgated and enforced from mid-this month after completing the remaining procedures such as the Cabinet meeting.
