Sopoong Ventures Hosts Seminar on 'Direct Carbon Capture' Technology Attracting Attention in Developed Countries

A forum will be held to discuss technology for capturing carbon dioxide from the air to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

Impact investment firm Sopung Ventures will host a seminar titled "The Role of Direct Air Capture (DAC) Technology for Carbon Neutrality and Green Growth" on the 20th. The event is co-hosted by Sopung Ventures and Kakao Impact Foundation, with support from the 2050 Carbon Neutral Green Growth Committee.

DAC technology captures carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere, unlike greenhouse gas emission sources such as factory chimneys. It differs from Carbon Capture (CC), which collects carbon dioxide generated from fossil fuel use.

Globally, startups such as Climeworks in Switzerland, Carbon Engineering in Canada, and Capture6 in the United States have successfully commercialized this technology.

South Korea has also shown active progress, including incorporating DAC technology into its 2050 carbon neutrality scenario last year. This event will examine Korea's carbon neutrality goals through DAC from various perspectives including technology, policy, business development and demand creation, and investment.

The seminar will begin with a presentation on global DAC technology trends by Park Hyung-geon, Vice President of Capture6. Kim Seong-woo, Head of the Environment and Energy Research Institute at Kim & Chang Law Firm; Park Yong-jin, Managing Director at EY Han Young Accounting Corporation; and Lim Dae-woong, CEO of BNZ Partners will chair the respective panel discussions. A total of 12 experts, including Kwon Yi-gyun, Head of the K-CCUS Promotion Team, and Shin Yong-nyeo, Chief Technology Officer of Microsoft Korea, will participate as panelists.

A representative from Sopung Ventures stated, "Many advanced countries such as the United States and Europe are focusing on the development and dissemination of DAC technology. Sopung Ventures will also actively review DAC-related technologies, including investing in the Silicon Valley DAC technology startup 'Capture6' in the U.S."

The seminar will be held from 3 p.m. at the Grand Walkerhill Seoul Convention Center. Government officials, local governments, the Korea CCUS Promotion Team, large corporations, financial institutions, investors, and academics are expected to attend. The event will be streamed live online, and online registration is available on the Impact Climate official website.
