Arkin's sons Adam, Matthew, and Anthony confirmed their father's passing in a statement.

The children said, "Our father was a uniquely talented individual both as an artist and as a human being," adding, "We loved him and will miss him."

Alan Arkin began his career as a stage actor with the famous Chicago theater troupe Second City before debuting on Broadway in the United States in 1961. He entered Hollywood with the film The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming (1966), and in 2007, he won the Academy Award (Oscar) for Best Supporting Actor for Little Miss Sunshine.
