Yuseongho, Na Heegyun, Park Dongwook, Park Myeongseong Awarded the Republic of Korea Academy of Arts Prize

Film Director Jeong Juri and Poet Shin Cheolgyu Receive Young Artist Award

Critic Yu Seong-ho, Western painter Na Hee-gyun, percussionist Park Dong-wook, and performance producer Park Myung-sung will receive the Korea Arts Academy Awards. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism selected them as this year’s awardees at the regular general meeting held on the 29th. They were recognized for their outstanding creative activities that have made significant contributions to the development of domestic arts.

Yu Seong-ho, dean of the College of Humanities at Hanyang University and director of the Korea Literature Translation Institute, has devoted nearly 30 years to literary criticism. He has steadily conducted modern poetry criticism, securing a unique position. His publications include Shapes and Logic of Modern Korean Poetry (1997), Crossing the Forest of Symbols (1999), Ripples of Silence (2002), The Architecture of Lyricism (2019), and The Depths of Modernity and the Aesthetics of Korean Poetry (2020). The Ministry of Culture explained, “He achieved remarkable accomplishments in modern literature research, contributing to the advancement of Korean literature.”


Na Hee-gyun, niece of Western painter Na Hye-seok, was the first female artist to study abroad in Europe in the 1950s. She deepened her artistic world while studying at the ?cole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, France. In the 1970s, she was the first in Korea to use neon, presenting new possibilities in materials and forms. In the 1980s, she infinitely expanded the boundaries of Korean contemporary art with original works using iron and pipes. Representative works include Roof (1958), Neon Triangle (1970), Pipe A (1974), Mountain D (1978), Rainbow (1982), Thoughts on Straw (2002), and Stairs Above the Clouds (2014).


Park Dong-wook is the pioneer who rooted Western percussion music in Korea. He majored in percussion at the Mannes School of Music in New York, USA, and served as principal timpanist for the National Symphony Orchestra and KBS Symphony Orchestra. He also established percussion majors at major domestic universities. Recognized for various contributions, he received the Musician of the Year Award (1984) and the National Music Award (1993). His major compositions include Contrast for Percussion and Wind Ensemble (1977), Pentameter for Four Percussionists (1998), Peace for Chorus, Piano, and Percussion (1999), and Hyochon for Orchestra (2008).

Park Myung-sung, CEO of Shinsee Company, is a first-generation domestic performance producer. He produced and planned high-quality plays and musicals, promoting the revitalization of performances. Works he has been involved with include Hamlet (2016), The Play That Goes Long (2018), Let Me In (2016), Please Look After Mom (2010), Sanbul (Wildfire) (2011; all plays), Matilda (2018), Billy Elliot (2017), Arirang (2015), Mamma Mia (2004), Aida (2005), Chicago (2000), and Quiz Show (2009; all musicals). The Ministry of Culture explained, “He has broadly contributed to the development of the performing arts field by creating 400 to 700 stage performances annually and employing about 500 personnel.”


Meanwhile, the Ministry of Culture selected poet Shin Cheol-gyu, critic Kang Dong-ho, Oriental painter Jo In-ho, sculptor Seo Hae-young, violinist Han Su-jin, group Jambinai member Lee Il-woo, and film director Jung Ju-ri as recipients of the Young Artist Award, newly established last year. The Korea Arts Academy will hold the awards ceremony on September 5.
