'Proliferation of New Parties' "Always Doubtful of Success"
Advice to Kim Gi-hyeon: "Don't Go to the US and Provoke China"
Former Democratic Party leader Lee Nak-yeon returned on the 24th after a year of studying in the United States, and as voices about his role within the party are growing, former lawmaker Yoo Seung-min evaluated that it would be "not easy" for him to take on a role within the party.
On the 26th, Yoo said on KBS's 'Choi Kyung-young's Strong Current Affairs', "It depends on the public's evaluation, but it won't be easy."
Regarding the formation of the Democratic Party's Innovation Committee, he said, "I really hope the Democratic Party innovates, but I don't think it will work well," adding, "From what I see, the various legal risks of leader Lee Jae-myung, the way they have been shielding him, and now the decision to give up on arrest, none of it was impressive at all."
Regarding the recent proliferation of 'new party formation' theories, he said, "It seems that there is always a political space open that can attract the public's interest. Especially, there is clearly a popular demand to break this cartel where the two major parties coexist antagonistically," but added, "It is very important who starts a new party with what vision, philosophy, and determination." In that sense, I always have doubts about whether a new party can truly succeed properly."
He said, "As someone who has been out on the asphalt trying to establish a reform conservative new party for three and a half years, unless there is a determination of life-or-death, a new party will not be easy," adding, "After elections, near the presidential election, they unite again, then near the general election, they form a new party again?people are already very disillusioned with this."
Former lawmaker Yoo emphasized the urgency of 'electoral system reform.' He said, "If since 1987, with the single-member district system, we have not been able to break this cartel of antagonistic coexistence, now it is necessary to open a channel that reflects the diverse political voices of the people and their policy voices in state affairs by adopting a medium or large electoral district system." "Whether there are three or four or more than five candidates in one district, whether it is a medium or large electoral district, a system that minimizes wasted votes and reflects diverse voices is important."
To Kim Ki-hyun, the People Power Party leader visiting the U.S. next month, he said, "Meeting with members of the U.S. Congress, the executive branch, and White House officials, the goal should be very concrete?to resolve the unfavorable provisions for our companies in the IRA (Inflation Reduction Act) and the CHIPS Act," adding, "What I want to ask lawmakers from both the Democratic Party and the People Power Party is, please do not make statements in the U.S. that provoke China, and do not make statements in China that provoke the U.S."
