Bio materials, parts, and equipment (SoBuJang) company Microdigital announced on the 26th that it will begin supplying disposable bags, "THEBAG," to Celltrion.
THEBAG is a disposable bag (Single Use Bag) necessary for the production of biopharmaceuticals and is a representative product of the bio SoBuJang industry, used extensively for storing cells and media, sample collection, mixing, and more.
The domestic disposable bag market has largely depended on a few overseas companies from the US and Europe, but the supply shortage triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need for localization. In response, the government, major pharmaceutical and bio companies, and SoBuJang companies have formed the "Bio and Vaccine SoBuJang Cooperative Council" to continue efforts toward the localization of SoBuJang in the domestic pharmaceutical and bio market.
Accordingly, Celltrion, as a demand company, has actively participated in the localization of core SoBuJang items necessary for biopharmaceutical development and production in line with government policies. Based on its proprietary technology and business needs, Celltrion has promoted more than 50 open innovation projects, and the supply of THEBAG is part of this open innovation effort. A Celltrion official stated, "We will continue efforts for mutual growth through ongoing collaboration with domestic SoBuJang companies."
The two companies plan to cooperate to localize various types of disposable bags starting with this supply. Celltrion expects to secure an additional stable supply chain, and Microdigital anticipates this will be an opportunity to diversify its sales structure and grow.
