Maintains 1st Place in Korea for Top 1% Paper Ratio, Demonstrating Excellence in Research Quality

Which university's papers have researchers who write scientific literature or theses cited the most worldwide?

Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST, President Yong-Hoon Lee) ranked first in Korea for the seventh consecutive year in the 2023 CWTS Leiden Ranking.

It was confirmed once again that the qualitative excellence of research was maintained at the highest level among domestic universities in both the proportion of top 10% papers and top 1% papers.

In the 2023 Leiden Ranking announced by Leiden University in the Netherlands on the 21st, UNIST ranked 178th worldwide and first in Korea. The proportion of top 10% papers was 12.6%, and the proportion of top 1% papers was 1.3%.

The Leiden Ranking evaluates only the citation performance of papers published by universities, excluding other factors such as reputation. It is regarded as a touchstone to gauge the qualitative excellence of research by evaluating the proportion of papers in the top 10% of citations among papers published by universities.

The evaluation is known to enhance objectivity by adjusting the contribution ratio for co-authorship (Fractional Counting).

UNIST first entered the Leiden Ranking in 2017 and has maintained the 'throne' as the top domestic university since then. The proportion of top 1% papers, which has been publicly available since 2018, has also ranked first in Korea for six consecutive years.
