Production of Popular Series 'Ojingeo Game 2' Begins
Ted Sarandos (58), co-CEO of the online video service (OTT) Netflix, met with domestic content creators and emphasized a solid partnership as a foundation for sustainable growth, promising to "strive to nurture the next generation of Korean creators."
On the 22nd, at the event "Netflix and Korean Content Stories" held at a hotel in Gwanghwamun, Jongno-gu, Seoul, Ted Sarandos stated, "The viewership of Netflix Korean content has increased sixfold over the past four years," and "more than 90% of K-romance viewership occurred outside of Korea."
He continued, "By 2025, one out of every five Korean content pieces on Netflix will be a debut work by a new writer or director," promising, "We will work hard to nurture the next generation of creators with potential to shine both in front of and behind the camera."
Sarandos said, "The partnership between Netflix and Korean creators will create infinite possibilities," adding, "We will strive to ensure that investments in Korea contribute to the development of the content ecosystem."
Byun Seung-min, CEO of Climax Studio, which presented "Hellbound," said, "Netflix is a partner with whom we can take on various challenges such as storytelling, themes, and directing that are rarely seen, instead of relying on standardized hit formulas." Kim Soo-ah, CEO of Sijak Company, which produced "Single’s Inferno," said, "We are changing the entertainment production ecosystem through pre-production," and added, "Netflix is a partner who shares the vision that entertainment can also achieve global success."
Lim Seung-yong, CEO of Yong Film, currently producing the films "Believer 2" and "Rogiwan," said, "Please continue your full support and interest in discovering and investing in new creators and actors." Following this, Kim Ji-yeon, CEO of First Man Studio, stated, "Based on the success of 'Squid Game,' we are currently producing season 2."
Son Seung-hyun, CEO of Westworld, which demonstrated new technology through "Sweet Home," said, "The number of works handled for VFX (special effects) and DI (digital intermediate) increased eightfold from 7 last year to 57," adding, "Along with quantitative growth, we have strengthened production infrastructure to deliver outstanding quality." Westworld’s staff grew from 3 at its founding in 2018 to 191, and its sales increased approximately 74 times.
Hong Sung-hwan, head of Scanline VFX/Iris Studio Korea, a Netflix subsidiary, said, "Global interest in Korean content is increasing to the extent that inquiries from overseas creators are pouring in," adding, "We will focus on nurturing artists who will be active on the global stage with various partners." He further added, "We will develop through cooperation in various fields."
