Ministry of Foreign Affairs: "ICAO Condemns North Korea... Result of Korean Government's Communication with the Board"

Ministry of Foreign Affairs: "North Korea's Continuous Violations of Regulations... Gained Sympathy from Board Members"

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) recently adopted a unanimous resolution condemning North Korea's missile launches, and it has been revealed that there was prior communication with our government regarding this matter.

At a regular briefing on the 22nd, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lim said in response to related questions, “Our country's local mission has been in contact with the ICAO Council Chair, Secretary-General, and representatives of key member states, emphasizing that overlooking North Korea's continuous violations of the Chicago Convention, that is, the Convention on International Civil Aviation and related regulations, could send the wrong signal to North Korea, which garnered the sympathy of the council members.”

Spokesperson Lim stated, “Our country, as the fifth largest power in the international aviation sector and the 7th largest financial contributor to ICAO, has built a close cooperative network with the ICAO Council Chair, Secretary-General, and key member states,” adding, “This decision can be seen as a diplomatic achievement based on the efforts to establish this local network.”

Earlier, on the 19th, at the 229th regular ICAO Council meeting held in Montreal, Canada, a unanimous resolution was adopted condemning North Korea's missile launches that violated the Chicago Convention and other international norms.

The ICAO Council resolution recalled the 2022 ICAO General Assembly resolution and urged North Korea to strictly comply with the Chicago Convention, its annexes, and related procedures. It also condemned North Korea's missile launches, which continuously violate UN Security Council resolutions and seriously threaten international civil aviation safety.
