Roe Deer Wanders Around Carrying Carcass After 'Roadkill'
"Discovered While Refueling on Commute... Recognition Was Late"
A vehicle was seen driving around with a dead water deer stuck on its front bumper until the next day, sparking intense controversy online.
On the 21st, two photos of a vehicle with a dead water deer stuck on its front bumper were posted on an online community under the title "Car owner unaware of the accident." The photos were taken at different locations, showing the vehicle parked in an underground parking lot and stopped on the roadside.
The vehicle's license plate was in a tattered state, as if it had fallen off after colliding with the water deer. Among netizens who saw this, suspicion spread widely that the driver might have been driving under the influence. They questioned how someone could hit a water deer ("roadkill") and not realize it until the next day.
As the controversy grew, a person identified as the vehicle owner, Mr. A, posted an explanation. Mr. A said, "The accident happened on the road leading to Namdaejeon IC in the early hours of the 20th," adding, "There was no loud noise, only a sound like running over a small pothole. I thought I had just driven over a shallow pothole."
He continued, "When I got home, I didn’t even think to check the car; I only checked the tire pressure to see if a tire was flat and then got out. When I left for work, I approached from behind and sat in the driver's seat," he explained.
According to Mr. A, he discovered the dead water deer stuck on the bumper when he stopped at a self-service gas station on his way to work. He added, "While I was refueling, the gas station owner noticed it, and that was the first time I realized it. I tried to remove the water deer’s body, but it wouldn’t come off, so I asked for help."
He denied the suspicion of drunk driving raised by some. Mr. A said, "I did not drive under the influence, nor did I drink any alcohol," and “I was simply slow to realize it. Please refrain from saying I was mentally unstable or a drunk driver. I’m worried because the repair costs seem to be higher than expected,” he lamented.
Meanwhile, if an animal is injured or killed in a vehicle collision on the road, the relevant authorities must be contacted to handle the carcass and take follow-up measures. In the case of accidents on highways, contact the Korea Expressway Corporation; for general roads, contact the Dasan Call Center or the Ministry of Environment to report the accident location and seek assistance.
