Gwangjin-gu Wins 2023 Youth-Friendly Governance Award for Communication Excellence

Gwangjin-gu (Mayor Kim Kyung-ho) achieved the great feat of receiving the Communication Award at the ‘2023 Youth-Friendly Dedication Awards’ hosted by the Youth and Future Corporation on the 19th.

The ‘Youth-Friendly Dedication Awards,’ administered by the Youth and Future Corporation under the National Assembly Secretariat, was established in 2018 and is now in its 6th year. It was created to commend local governments that strive for a better life for youth and to spread exemplary cases.

Gwangjin-gu enhanced its status as a youth-friendly city by winning the Communication Award as the ‘2023 Excellent Youth-Friendly Metropolitan Local Government.’ New projects launched this year and various initiatives embracing youth from multiple sectors played a significant role in this achievement.

First, based on the Youth Basic Ordinance enacted earlier this year, the district established the ‘Gwangjin-gu Youth Basic Plan,’ reflecting the results of a youth survey and the opinions of the Youth Policy Committee. In April, it launched the ‘Youth Employment Academy’ and recruited its first cohort of trainees, while also attracting attention by opening a ‘Youth Portal’ for youth communication.

Additionally, Gwangjin-gu is the first autonomous district in Seoul to implement and operate support for language and qualification exam fees. It also runs ▲ Gwangjin Orang Youth Center ▲ region-led youth job projects ▲ support for challenge accommodations ▲ youth caregiver family care (Gwangjin-type PLUS Care SOS Project) ▲ support for youth preparing for independence (former wards of child protection) ▲ and youth policy governance activation projects, conducting various programs for youth across daily life, employment, welfare, culture, and economy.

Furthermore, the district is currently promoting the construction of a ‘Youth Comprehensive Welfare Center (tentative name)’ that reflects youth demands in the near future. It plans to actively lead initiatives such as ‘Campus Town,’ which supports youth entrepreneurship by utilizing local university infrastructure, and ‘University Area Culture and Arts Support.’

Kim Kyung-ho, Mayor of Gwangjin-gu, said, “We are pleased to receive the ‘Communication Award’ while making multifaceted efforts to listen to and communicate with youth,” adding, “We will continue to actively implement various policies to solve the difficulties faced by youth together.”

Meanwhile, the selection was made by the Youth-Friendly Selection Committee, composed of 300 members including youth, university professors, CEOs, lawyers, and journalists, who evaluated local governments’ youth-friendly indices based on policies and communication achievements for youth.

The ‘2023 Youth-Friendly Dedication Awards’ ceremony will be held on September 16, Youth Day, at the Peace Plaza in Olympic Park.
