The Jeju Regional Coast Guard Agency (Chief Han Sang-chul) announced on the 19th that it will hold an inauguration ceremony for the launch of the fourth nationwide Surf Rescue Team along with a private rescue competition at 10:30 a.m. on the 24th at Jeju Iho Tewoo Beach.
This event was planned to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the Coast Guard and to strengthen private maritime rescue capabilities and spread marine safety culture to the public in Jeju, known as the first place where surfing started in Korea in 1995 and a major domestic surfing spot.
The event will begin at 10 a.m. with a performance by the Coast Guard Orchestra, followed by the inauguration ceremony of the Surf Rescue Team.
In the afternoon, about 500 participants including the general public will compete in six individual and team events: sea swimming, run-swim-run, surfboard racing, drowning victim rescue, beach running, and flag grabbing. Winners in each category will receive certificates and trophies (medals) from the Chief of the Coast Guard Agency, along with a cash prize.
Additionally, various on-site events will be held for beach visitors in collaboration with related organizations (Jeju Fire Station, Jeju Autonomous Police Mounted Unit, JDC, Jeju Integrated Addiction Management Support Center, Health Management Association), including a drug prevention campaign, life jacket wearing campaign, Coast Guard activity photo exhibition, rescue board experience, CPR and first aid experience, mounted unit parade, and performances by guest singers.
A Jeju Coast Guard official stated, “We expect this event to raise public understanding and interest in marine rescue,” adding, “We will continue to actively work to prioritize the lives of citizens during marine and disaster accidents through enhanced public-private cooperation and ensure the safety of Jeju’s seas.”
