Gayageum byeongchang performer Cheon Jumi will present the Gayageum byeongchang 'Danga Jeon' on June 22nd at 7:30 PM at the Korea Culture House Kows. Cheon Jumi, who is currently working with the National Gugak Center's Folk Orchestra, has been showcasing various projects monthly under the name 'Monthly 竝唱-Cheon Jumi' since December 2022 to celebrate her 30th anniversary as a musician. So far, she has performed the 'Gayageum byeongchang Complete Series' featuring 'Chunhyangga,' 'Sugungga,' 'Heungboga,' and 'Simcheongga,' and in May, she premiered new Buddhist hymns combining Buddhist music and Gayageum byeongchang.
In this 'Danga Jeon,' nine Gayageum byeongchang danga songs will be performed on stage. Danga refers to short sounds sung to warm up the voice before singing long notes. Compared to pansori, it may seem shorter and simpler, but it is a genre that requires a clear structure of introduction, development, turn, and conclusion, as well as a strong sense of rhythm in the vocalization, with each song distinctly expressing its characteristics. This performance will offer an opportunity to enjoy well-known danga songs such as the relatively long danga pieces 'Jangbuga,' 'Jukjangmanghye,' and 'Nogeumbangcho,' as well as 'Honamga,' 'Baekbalga,' and 'Gongmyeongga' all in one place.
Gayageum performer Cheon Jumi's 'Monthly 竝唱-Cheon Jumi' series will continue with the August performance of 'Jeokbyeokga' and the November 'Lecture Concert - North Korean Gayageum Byeongchang' scheduled ahead.
