[AI Hegemony War Korea's Winning Move] The Ultimate Efficiency Brought by ChatGPT... My Colleagues Are Disappearing

The development of generative artificial intelligence (AI) like OpenAI's ChatGPT is threatening various professions. Journalists are no exception. There are already more than 100 news websites worldwide where AI creates all or most of the articles. After actually using ChatGPT in work, it was clear that many journalists' jobs are sufficiently threatened.

Research that used to take an hour, done in just one minute

The efficiency ChatGPT provides in work was considerable. Generally, planning articles require a lot of time for preliminary research. This process can take at least an hour and sometimes a full day. Therefore, it is common for two or three people to collaborate.

In fact, while covering jobs in the AI era, I compared the speed of work with and without using AI. When not using AI, it took one hour to organize the information, but with AI, it took less than five minutes. The AI tools used were ChatGPT and ChatGPT’s Google Chrome browser extension. This was to compensate for ChatGPT not being connected online.

The most efficient parts when using AI were translation and summarization. Reading an English report and summarizing the key points used to take tens of minutes, but with AI, it was shortened to around 30 seconds. Also, the speed of summarizing and rearranging various researched contents was a clear victory for AI.

The job threat brought by extreme efficiency

In the case of ChatGPT, article writing itself still had many shortcomings to match human level. It listed unclear facts, resulting in low reliability. There is also the limitation that it cannot directly cover the field.

However, in many other aspects, it threatened journalists' jobs. The speed and accuracy of AI in creating visuals such as graphs for articles are unmatched. The same goes for sentence proofreading. The era when multiple journalists gathered to brainstorm due to the heavy workload of preliminary research is coming to an end. Ultimately, journalists who better utilize AI and create higher efficiency are expected to survive.
