Daejeon Records Net Population Outflow of 2,966 in Last Year... Top Destination Region 'Chungnam'

Last year, the net population outflow (in-migrants minus out-migrants) in the Daejeon area was 2,966 people, with Chungnam identified as the region with the highest number of out-migrants.

According to the Daejeon Sejong Institute on the 15th, the total number of people who moved into Daejeon from other regions last year was 198,705, while the total number of people who moved out was 201,701.


The region with the highest number of in-migrants was Gyeonggi-do. Last year, 13,260 people from Gyeonggi-do changed their resident registration to Daejeon, accounting for 17.6% of the total in-migrants. This was followed by Chungnam with 13,101 people (17.4%), Seoul with 10,454 people (13.9%), and Sejong with 7,024 people (9.3%) in descending order of in-migrant numbers.


The region that received the most population outflow from Daejeon was Chungnam. Last year, 13,880 people (17.7%) moved their resident registration from Daejeon to Chungnam, accounting for 17.7% of the total. Following Chungnam were Gyeonggi-do with 13,694 people (17.5%), Seoul with 13,169 people (16.8%), and Sejong with 10,642 people (13.6%) as the regions with the most out-migrants.


However, when combining in-migrants and out-migrants, the actual net outflow from Daejeon to Chungnam was 2,779 people, indicating the difference was not significant.


Conversely, the region with a large difference between out-migration and in-migration was Sejong. The number of people who moved from Daejeon to Sejong (out-migrants) exceeded those who moved from Sejong to Daejeon (in-migrants) by 3,618 people.


Besides Sejong, net outflows were also recorded in Seoul (2,715 people), Chungnam (779 people), and Gyeonggi-do (434 people).

The reasons for inter-regional migration included jobs, family, housing, education, residential environment, and natural environment. Among these, 'jobs' was cited as the biggest reason for moving between regions, accounting for 40.9% of the total.


By the status of the five autonomous districts, only Yuseong-gu had more in-migrants than out-migrants by 3,651 people, while Seo-gu, Jung-gu, Dong-gu, and Daedeok-gu had more out-migrants than in-migrants.


The scale of net population outflow was 1,380 people in Dong-gu, 884 people in Seo-gu, 792 people in Daedeok-gu, and 595 people in Jung-gu, in that order.
