EU: "Meta's Child Protection Content Management Inadequate... Will Meet Zuckerberg"

"If No Measures Taken, Strong Sanctions Will Follow"

The European Union (EU) demanded on the 8th (local time) that Meta, the parent company of Facebook, properly manage child pornography content.

Thierry Breton, EU Commissioner for Internal Market, pointed out on Twitter that day, "Meta's voluntary code of conduct for child protection does not seem to be working." He added, "(Meta CEO) Mark Zuckerberg must explain this and take immediate action." He also mentioned that he plans to meet Zuckerberg at Meta's headquarters in San Francisco, USA, on the 23rd to discuss this issue.

Commissioner Breton referred to the Digital Services Act (DSA), which will take effect in August, warning, "Meta must show the EU measures based on the DSA, or it will face strong sanctions."

The DSA was introduced to prevent the online distribution of content related to certain racial, sexual, or religious bias, terrorism, and child sexual abuse. It came into effect in November last year, and regulations on 19 major platforms will be fully enforced starting August 25 this year.
