Volvo Cars unveiled the next-generation premium compact electric sports utility vehicle (SUV), the 'Volvo EX30,' for the first time in the world at an event held in Milan, Italy, on the 7th (local time).
The EX30 is Volvo Cars' first premium compact SUV and the fourth model expanding its pure electric vehicle lineup.
Volvo designed the EX30 based on Scandinavian design and cutting-edge technology to enable top-level safety and brand experience even in a small body. It achieved the lowest CO2 emissions among Volvo models by carefully selecting materials as well as reducing carbon emissions throughout the entire production and product lifecycle.
The exterior features digital version 'Thor's Hammer' headlights, emphasizing the unique character of a pure electric vehicle. A long wheelbase, equal front and rear overhangs, and large-sized wheels add balance and sophistication. Five exterior colors are available, including Cloud Blue and Moss Yellow.
The interior offers four interior room options made from sustainable materials. These include recycled denim, recycled plastic, flax-based synthetic fibers, wool blends, and knit fabrics made from recycled materials.
For the first time in automotive design, a soundbar spanning the entire width of the dashboard and smart storage functions have been applied. Inspired by home audio systems, the EX30’s soundbar is a prime example of smart design that integrates multiple speakers, typically located in the doors, into one unit. This secures more storage space while reducing unnecessary resource use.
Additionally, the glove box, usually located in front of the passenger seat, has been moved below the center screen. The center console features a sliding system to store beverages or smartphones.
The EX30 is designed simply so that all information can be viewed on a single screen to enhance driver attention. The 12.3-inch center screen located in the middle of the dashboard creates a driver-focused space by providing all necessary driving information on one screen. A 'Calm' view mode that shows only essential information is also available.
Moreover, users can access Google’s advanced infotainment services, including ▲Google Assistant hands-free ▲Google Maps navigation ▲Google Play apps preferred by users. Notably, it is the first Volvo car to support wireless Apple CarPlay. For models released in the Korean market, infotainment developed in collaboration with T map Mobility is applied.
Volvo offers three powertrain options combining two types of batteries for the EX30. ▲The rear-wheel-based lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery paired with a single motor is suitable for short-distance urban driving. It provides a driving range of 344 km (WLTP standard) on a single charge.
The second option is ▲a rear-wheel-based NMC battery with a single motor configuration, capable of driving up to 480 km (WLTP standard) on a single charge. ▲Additionally, there is a choice of an NMC battery with twin motors and all-wheel drive, delivering a powerful output of 428 horsepower and a zero-to-100 km/h acceleration time of 3.6 seconds. The battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in just 25 minutes.
Jim Rowan, CEO of Volvo, said, "The EX30 means much more than simply being the smallest SUV for customers and the brand. Small but more powerful, the EX30 is an excellent product designed to be safe and human-centered like other models."
