Seoul National University Political Science Professor, CBS Radio Interview
South Korea's Diplomatic Achievement as UN Security Council Non-Permanent Member
Professor Shin Beom-sik of the Department of Political Science at Seoul National University said in an interview with CBS Radio's 'Kim Hyun-jung's News Show' on the morning of the 7th, "We have become the third non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. The Security Council is truly the pinnacle of multilateral diplomacy as reported," adding, "Our becoming a member means we can exert significant diplomatic influence."
Professor Shin explained, "This means that the government can confirm its status as a global pivotal state and has gained an important foundation to implement it. Since Japan is also a member now, there is a situation where Japan, South Korea, and the U.S. can cooperate to create momentum for the UN to apply stronger pressure regarding North Korea's nuclear issues and missile launches."
South Korea has been elected as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).On the 6th (local time), South Korea received 180 votes in favor out of 192 member states participating in the vote at the General Assembly non-permanent member election held at the UN Headquarters in New York, exceeding the two-thirds majority.

When asked whether there was support from the U.S. and Japan during the selection process for the Security Council non-permanent membership, Professor Shin said, "Of course, there was supportive fire, but our country itself also has the diplomatic capability to secure such support. The fact that 180 countries ultimately voted in favor can be interpreted as overwhelming support."
Meanwhile, South Korea was elected as a non-permanent member of the Security Council in an election held at the U.S. United Nations Headquarters on the 6th (local time) and will serve as a non-permanent member for two years starting next year.
