Intensive Maintenance of Hazardous Street Trees Such as Donggongmok Before the Rainy Season Through Specialized Companies
Pruning Work, Trunk Injection, and Other Measures to Prevent Pests and Diseases and Improve Street Tree Growth Environment
May Tender for Hazardous Street Tree Diagnosis Service... Creating a Safe and Pleasant Green Environment
Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Choi Ho-kwon) announced that it will create a safe and pleasant street green environment by maintaining hazardous street trees in preparation for natural disasters such as typhoons before the rainy season.
Street trees play a significant positive role by filling the lack of greenery in urban areas, blocking fine dust, and mitigating the heat island effect. However, hazardous street trees such as Donggongmok with holes and rotten trunks, trees with poor form, and leaning trees can cause various accidents by being hit by large buses or trucks or being toppled by strong winds such as typhoons.
Accordingly, the district plans to minimize damage to residents by maintaining hazardous street trees before the rainy season. Trees with Donggongmok, pest and disease damage, dead trees, and those at risk of toppling will be pre-maintained through specialized companies. Pruning of street trees will also be carried out to prevent pests and diseases caused by dense branches and to maintain the unique form of each tree species.
In addition, the growth environment of street trees will be further improved through trunk injections and regular pre-inspections.
In May, the district issued the '2023 Street Tree Hazardous Tree Diagnosis Service' for species vulnerable to wind and flood damage such as Populus and Sophora japonica, as well as large street trees. Hazardous street trees will be sequentially maintained through diagnosis by tree experts and specialized equipment to prevent repeated street tree overturning accidents. In particular, Populus, which accounts for 15.8% of all street trees in the area and is aging with Donggongmok, will be replaced with other species to reduce damage to residents.
Choi Ho-kwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, said, “We will prevent safety accidents through thorough street tree maintenance before the rainy season and provide a beautiful urban landscape. We will continue to promote street tree maintenance to create a green city where nature and people harmonize.”
