On the same day, Apple held its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) at Apple Park in Cupertino, California, and announced the MR headset 'Vision Pro.' This is Apple's first new product launch in nine years since introducing the Apple Watch in 2014.

Apple CEO Tim Cook said, "Today marks the beginning of a new era in computing," adding, "Just as the Mac opened the era of personal computing and the iPhone opened the era of mobile computing, Apple Vision Pro brings spatial computing to us." He continued, "Vision Pro introduces a completely new revolutionary input system years ahead and thousands of groundbreaking technological innovations," and said, "It will provide users with an incredible experience and exciting new possibilities for developers."

Control Using Only Eyes, Hands, and Voice

Vision Pro offers users the sensation that digital content physically exists in real space through visionOS, the world's first spatial operating system. It dynamically responds to natural light and casts shadows to help users perceive the size and distance of the space. Apple introduced a new input system that allows users to explore and experience spatial content without separate controls, using only their eyes, hands, and voice. Users can simply fix or move their gaze to open apps and select apps by pinching with two fingers. They can scroll by nodding their wrist up and down or give voice commands.

It also features EyeSight. When someone approaches a person wearing Vision Pro, the device becomes transparent, allowing the user's eyes to be seen. The user can also see the people around them. It provides a visual indicator to others showing what the user is focusing on.

Vision Pro is equipped with two micro OLED displays with 23 million pixels. The spatial audio system creates the sensation that sound is coming from the surrounding environment. Each audio pod contains two individual amplified drivers that provide personalized spatial audio tailored to the user's head and ear shape. The eye-tracking system uses a high-speed camera and ring-shaped LEDs that project invisible light patterns onto the user's eyes to offer intuitive responsive input functions.

Equipped with Dual-Chip Semiconductor Architecture

When making FaceTime calls on Vision Pro, all participants are represented as life-sized tiles, and spatial audio is applied. Apple explains that users will feel as if the voices are coming from the locations of the callers. Users can watch movies together, browse photos, or collaborate on presentations.

The brain of Vision Pro is equipped with a dual-chip semiconductor architecture featuring the M2 and R1 chips. It processes information input from 12 cameras, 5 sensors, and 6 microphones to render content in real time right before the user's eyes. It streams new images to the screen within 12 milliseconds, eight times faster than the blink of an eye.
