Modern Succession of Jeongsun Spirit through Local Student Participation in Rituals
Miryang City in Gyeongnam announced that the 2023 Arang Memorial Rite was held on the 4th at Aranggak within Yeongnamru Pavilion.
The Arang Memorial Rite is held annually on the 16th day of the 4th lunar month based on the legend of ‘Arang,’ who was wrongfully killed while maintaining her chastity during the reign of King Myeongjong of the Joseon Dynasty.
The Miryang Arang Association, led by President Kim Jandi, organized this rite, with students recommended from seven local high schools attending as ritual officers.
In response to changing times, the model virtuous woman selection contest was abolished, and since 2021, local high school students have participated as ritual officers to honor Arang’s spirit of chastity.
The participating students wore neat hanbok while performing the rites; three female students served as ritual attendants, and one male student participated as an assistant.
A city official stated, “It is very meaningful that local students participate to learn and respect Miryang’s culture, fostering a sense of hometown pride and self-esteem, and continuing the traditions and spirit of our region. The spirit of chastity from the Arang legend is one of Miryang’s three core spirits and serves as the foundation connecting the region’s history and traditions. We will continue efforts to honor Arang’s history and spirit.”
